New Jersey was founded by George Carteret and John Berkeley, who were English Royalists who owned land in the area. The colony was granted to them by King Charles II in 1664 as a reward for their loyalty to the Crown during the English Civil War. It was the third state to ratify the United States Constitution, on December 18, 1787, and its 1776 constitution is the oldest in use by any U.S. state.
